“Of course,” Walter said the next afternoon. “Of course you heard chickens.” He sat perched on the sofa, over a copy of the New York Times.

“I thought I was losing it.”

“Political science is across from agriculture and animal husbandry. Behind that big wall on the other side of the street? That’s where they have the animal barns.

“So you and Chad went out last night?” Walter was good at that, changing the subject, shifting the ground out from underneath me before I realized it.

“Just some dinner.” I didn’t tell him it had been at Chad’s house, that we had sat talking until the candles burned out.

“I was free last night.”

“You were?” I sharpened a pencil over the garbage can. “I assumed you’d be busy.”

“No more than usual.”

Walter picked up one of my books off the floor. Miracles of Mary, he read out loud in English, even though the text was in Italian. He leafed through it, the stories of New Jersey and New Orleans, Mexico and Santa Fe. If he’d wanted to change the subject, he could not have found a better way. Just seeing that book in his hands made me feel as if he were peeling back the skin on my forehead to poke inside my skull. I grabbed it from him, placed it on my windowsill with my dictionary and all my notes.

“I wanted to copy the cover art,” I said, even though he hadn’t even asked.

“Oh. So anyway, you should’ve called. We could’ve cleared up this chicken mystery.”

“Next time,” I said.

He dropped his eyes. “Next time,” he confirmed, turning a page of his newspaper. I had seen him whispering in the halls with Paolo, private conversations that he turned away from as soon as he heard my steps in the stairwell. Walter kept things from me. I kept things from him. What made it somehow worse was that now we both seemed to know it.
